Master of Education in Special Education, Elementary-Middle (1-8)

The Master of Education in Special Education with concentration in Elementary-Middle program is designed to provide initial Maryland teaching certification and advanced professional training. Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Special Education (B-12)

The Special Education Leadership PhD program is a 67-credit hour research track program that features coursework in research design, quantitative research, survey design, statistics, and qualitative research. The Master of Education in Special Education degree program prepares students to be teachers for disabled children and adolescents (grades K-12). The curriculum is designed in a non-categorical standard for special needs including learning, mental, physical, behavioral and emotional disabilities. Graduates trained in this method are better able to teach students with multiple or complex requirements.

Candidates should already possess a general education endorsement as a prerequisite for the Learning Behavior Specialist I program. This fully accredited degree focuses on research for integration and inclusion techniques. In addition, acquired skills include developmental theory, academic and behavior assessment methods, adapting curriculum process for special needs children, consultation and collaboration with special education professionals and families.

The M.Ed. program requires 33 semester hours and a student teaching experience to earn the degree. An endorsement in Special Education Teaching is included in this series.

Master of Science in Education: Special Education Learning Behavior Specialist I (M.S. Ed.) (K-12)

The Special Education Learning Behavior Specialist I master’s degree program qualifies graduates to receive a teaching certificate in special education. Developmental, learning and physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury, behavior disorders and autism are child and adolescent exceptionalities addressed with this program.

An emphasis on methods for teaching elementary and secondary school students with disabilities gives graduate students skills on instructional procedures, assessment and adaptation techniques, curriculum planning for special needs, testing and progress reporting. Master’s students must select a specialization and complete a supervised special education field experience related to the selection. Content and Special Education General Curriculum tests must be taken prior to a student teaching assignment is approved. Master of Science in Education: Special Education Visual Impairments
(M.S. Ed.) (K-12)

Northern Illinois University’s College of Education features a prestigious visual disability master’s degree program. Graduate-level coursework provides training as a special education teacher of children and youth (grades K-12) with visual disabilities, an orientation and mobility specialist or a rehabilitation teacher. This accredited program allows for licensure with endorsements in Learning Behavior Specialist I and Elementary education. Teaching qualifications upon completion of the series include: Technology in the special education classroom, math, language arts, social studies and science for the learning disabled, theory and history of special education, social and emotional development, art and music for diverse learners, planning and instruction for special needs classroom environments.

A minimum of 100 hours of practicum experience is required in a special education atmosphere. Candidates must prepare lesson plans, give student assessments and complete weekly analysis portfolios that specifically address the issues of individuals with special needs.

Bachelor of Arts: Special Education (B.A.)
[Previously known as Learning Disabilities/Educable Mentally Handicapped (LD/EMH)]

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a Special Education major will qualify the student for a Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBSI) licensure. This program focuses on teaching children and youth between the ages of three and 21 with educable mental retardation, behavior disorders, physical limitations, speech disorders and limited social skills.

Coursework is structured to instruct students on the following proficiencies: Language development (verbal and non-verbal), physical development and health (relationship between fitness and learning capabilities), assistive technology for mentally disabled children and youth and creating safe learning environments for inclusive settings.

An important component of the B.A. program is the completion of field and clinical experiences. Two field sessions of 25 hours each are required – the first is an observational group setting and the second is an in-depth study of an individual child. Student teaching must be in Peoria-area classroom environments.

Master of Arts: Curriculum and Instruction with concentration in Special Education (M.A.) (K-12)

The Master of Arts degree program in Curriculum and Instruction includes a concentration in Special Education for children and adolescents (ages K-12). Candidates for this accredited program must already have a teaching certificate and require a special education endorsement. Learning, behavioral and emotional disabilities are areas of focus.

This graduate degree series provides future educators with the skills to produce instructional strategies for students with exceptionalities, understand special education law, form lesson plans and implement in inclusive settings, and complete an advanced practicum in a special education environment.

The Master of Science in Education with concentration in Special Education Early Childhood addresses the evaluation process for at-risk young children (ages birth to eight) with special needs. Screening for disability identification and severity levels (excluding vision and hearing) is included in both the coursework and preschool field experiences. Methods are taught for early intervention strategies for young children with the potential for exceptional learning needs. Verbal and non-verbal assessment skills are learned plus effective reporting techniques and collaboration systems.

The graduate program requires a maximum of 36 credit hours of coursework and field experiences. All candidates must possess a special education license prior to completion of the master’s degree. Learning goals of the curriculum include efficient oral and written communication skills. critical thinking and problem solving abilities, strong research aptitude, in-depth knowledge of typical and atypical development of young children, and establish family plans when children are identified as exceptional.

Graduates may seek Illinois teacher certification in special education and Learning Behavior Specialist I certification.

Bachelor of Arts: Special Education (B.A.) (K-12)

Special education teachers are in high demand, and the Bachelor of Arts program for grades K-12 at Eastern Illinois University carries an excellent reputation in the field. The undergraduate degree helps students gain valuable experience in the areas of traumatic brain injuries, intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, learning disabilities and behavior disorders. Field experiences expose students to a wide range of exceptionalities – from mild to profound.

Master of Teaching in Special Education General Curriculum (M.A.T.) (P-12)

The Master of Teaching in Special Education General Curriculum is designed for preparation of initial special education teachers who do not hold a teaching certification. Graduate students will become proficient in working with special needs children and youth (grades P-12) plus support interrelated learning issues (gifted in one academic area and deficient in another).

Candidates of the master’s degree program will become adept in behavior management, language development, reading methods for disabled children, evaluation and assessment, interrelated challenges, integration techniques and collaborative skills in working with professionals and families of disabled children and youth.

All students must complete an internship supervised by a special education professional. In addition, graduate candidates must pass the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) exam. Upon successful completion of the required courses and exam, graduates may receive a recommendation for a T-5 State of Georgia Teacher’s Certificate.

All master’s students must complete coursework, field studies and applied research for their degree. Graduates must demonstrate both initial and advanced skills Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) tests prior to certification.

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate: SETWEB Interrelated (K-12)

The SETWEB Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Special Education is an innovative online program designed for students with a bachelor’s degree who want to obtain certification as a special education teacher. Special Education Training on the Web (SETWEB) is a non-degree program that provides candidates with the necessary skills to teach children and adolescents (grades K-12) with disabilities. Typical high-incidence disabilities include learning disabilities, behavior disorders, mild intellectual disabilities or health impaired disorders. In all cases, inclusion, mainstreaming and co-taught classrooms are the preferred methods for students within these disability groups.

At least 15 hours per week of student teaching experiences must be completed in addition to the online coursework. Online graduate courses identify characteristics associated with each disorder and disability plus methods for teaching academic and social skills. A recommendation for certification is made upon completion of the program and successful completion of the GACE test.

Supervised field work is required in a school environment with mentally retarded, autistic and children and youth with intellectual disabilities. Master of Arts in Special Education: Varying Exceptionalities

The master’s degree program prepares educators for a Special Education Endorsement with a concentration in Varying Exceptionalities. Training involves advanced psycho-educational assessment of exceptional students with a focus on creating and implementing structured educational programs. Both classroom and field environments emphasize the need for affirmation of cultural and individual differences with disabled students. The program uses a combination of group and individual teaching methods for low-level special needs such as hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities, and health impairments.

The curriculum focuses on early intervention and assessment techniques. Practical experience in a teaching environment is required for completion of the program. This master’s program prepares students for State of Colorado Licensure through demanding classroom preparation and extensive field training. Emphasis is placed on special education student assessment for appropriate referral and intervention.

Master of Education: Severe Needs Affective (K-12) (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education: Severe Needs Affective program prepares students with the skills necessary for assessing and formalizing an effective intervention plan for severe needs children and adolescents (K-12.) Learning outcomes include methods for academic instruction of the most severe or profound behavior for both emotional functioning and executive functioning disabilities such as autism. Techniques for stabilizing behavior are the main focus to ultimately prepare for an environment of inclusion for all special needs students.

Students are eligible for licensure after completion of the curriculum and student teaching in a special needs environment. This degree program is fully accredited by both national and state level associations.

Master of Education: Severe Needs Cognitive (K-12) (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education: Severe Needs Cognitive program provides students with instructional techniques for intensive individual education for children and adolescents (K-12) with severe cognitive impairment or mental retardation. Learning outcomes include designing an instructional plan based on the individual needs (physical, behavioral and intellectual) of the special needs student plus effective collaborative practices with parents, physicians and other instructors. Additionally, proficiency in management skills for a variety of medical problems such as physical impairments, limited speech or communication, behavioral problems and difficulty repeating basic skills are implemented.

This master’s level program prepares students for an advanced endorsement and licensure and meets all Colorado state requirements. In addition, it is fully accredited by both national and state level associations.

A licensure endorsement for Orientation and Mobility is also available and includes a four-week on-campus requirement. A total of 42 credit hours are needed to complete the master’s degree.

Master of Arts Special Education – Gifted and Talented (M.A.)

The Master of Arts Special Education – Gifted and Talented degree program is designed for teachers to meet the unique needs of gifted and talented children of all grade levels. Learning competencies include:

The Master of Arts Special Education – Deaf/Hard of Hearing program is designed for teacher preparation at a graduate level. It provides comprehensive training with an endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing from birth to age 21. Licensure will allow the teacher to work as a home-intervention specialist plus teach preschool, elementary or secondary schools with deaf or hard of hearing children. Learning outcomes include communication instruction for speech, American Sign Language (ASL) and other sign systems.

This graduate program typically requires two years to complete and is available online for convenience distance learning. Institutional recommendation for licensure is available upon completion. Graduate Research is a mandatory requirement for endorsement in special education.

Master of Arts Special Education – Generalist Teacher (M.A.)

The Master of Arts Special Education – Generalist Teacher program prepares students to become teachers for children with disabilities – grades K-12. These disabilities are wide ranging and include learning and behavior disabilities, autism, cognitive and intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. The M.A. Generalist Teacher will not be trained for assisting students with visual or hearing impairments.

This degree program meets national and state standards and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The degree can be completed in a traditional campus setting or online. Core competencies include assessment, students with behavioral challenges, literacy, math and practicum.
