Both tracks prepare teachers to instruct mild/moderate disabilities at preschool, elementary, secondary and adult age groups. Teachers at secondary and adult levels in an inclusive setting will assist students in transitioning and vocational skills.

Post-Baccalaureate Accelerated Certification in Teaching with Concentration in Special Education (PreK-6; 6-Adult)

Master of Science in Education: Special Education Visual Impairments
(M.S. Ed.) (K-12)

Northern Illinois University’s College of Education features a prestigious visual disability master’s degree program. Teaching qualifications upon completion of the series include: Technology in the special education classroom, math, language arts, social studies and science for the learning disabled, theory and history of special education, social and emotional development, art and music for diverse learners, planning and instruction for special needs classroom environments.

A minimum of 100 hours of practicum experience is required in a special education atmosphere. Candidates must prepare lesson plans, give student assessments and complete weekly analysis portfolios that specifically address the issues of individuals with special needs.

Bachelor of Arts: Special Education (B.A.)

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a Special Education major will qualify the student for a Learning Behavior Specialist I (LBSI) licensure. An important component of the B.A. program is the completion of field and clinical experiences. Two field sessions of 25 hours each are required – the first is an observational group setting and the second is an in-depth study of an individual child. Student teaching must be in Peoria-area classroom environments.

Master of Arts: Curriculum and Instruction with concentration in Special Education (M.A.) (K-12)

The Master of Arts degree program in Curriculum and Instruction includes a concentration in Special Education for children and adolescents (ages K-12). Candidates for this accredited program must already have a teaching certificate and require a special education endorsement. Learning, behavioral and emotional disabilities are areas of focus.

The graduate program requires a maximum of 36 credit hours of coursework and field experiences. All candidates must possess a special education license prior to completion of the master’s degree. Learning goals of the curriculum include efficient oral and written communication skills. critical thinking and problem solving abilities, strong research aptitude, in-depth knowledge of typical and atypical development of young children, and establish family plans when children are identified as exceptional.

Graduates may seek Illinois teacher certification in special education and Learning Behavior Specialist I certification.

Bachelor of Arts: Special Education (B.A.) (K-12)

Special education teachers are in high demand, and the Bachelor of Arts program for grades K-12 at Eastern Illinois University carries an excellent reputation in the field. The SETWEB Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Special Education is an innovative online program designed for students with a bachelor’s degree who want to obtain certification as a special education teacher. Special Education Training on the Web (SETWEB) is a non-degree program that provides candidates with the necessary skills to teach children and adolescents (grades K-12) with disabilities. Each graduate student attains expertise in teaching children and youth with learning disabilities. Anticipated skills include evaluation and understanding of specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, executive function issues, Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, auditory and comprehension disabilities, and a range of other challenges.

Collaborative skills are honed through advanced practicum experiences to encourage life-long learning. Instructional strategies are implemented with learning disabled children and youth for best practice techniques in special education. An application for a Special Education Endorsement can be submitted upon completion of the program.

Master of Arts in Special Education: Mental Retardation

The M.A. in Special Education: Mental Retardation program is distributed online and prepares the graduate student for a career as a special education teacher for severely disabled children and youth. Complex social and biological disabilities are studied and problem solving techniques are practiced to promote the best practices in special education. In addition, students will be qualified in providing unrestrictive school settings for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other Intellectual Disabilities.

Supervised field work is required in a school environment with mentally retarded, autistic and children and youth with intellectual disabilities. With an increasing number of students being diagnosed as ASD and InD, there are shortages of qualified educators in this field. Now, more than ever, special education teachers must present a sensitive work ethic and the ability to work cooperatively with other professionals, families and children with severe disabilities. Master of Arts in Special Education: Varying Exceptionalities

The master’s degree program prepares educators for a Special Education Endorsement with a concentration in Varying Exceptionalities. Training involves advanced psycho-educational assessment of exceptional students with a focus on creating and implementing structured educational programs. Both classroom and field environments emphasize the need for affirmation of cultural and individual differences with disabled students. The curriculum focuses on early intervention and assessment techniques. Practical experience in a teaching environment is required for completion of the program. This master’s program prepares students for State of Colorado Licensure through demanding classroom preparation and extensive field training. Emphasis is placed on special education student assessment for appropriate referral and intervention.

Master of Education: Severe Needs Affective (K-12) (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education: Severe Needs Affective program prepares students with the skills necessary for assessing and formalizing an effective intervention plan for severe needs children and adolescents (K-12.) Learning outcomes include methods for academic instruction of the most severe or profound behavior for both emotional functioning and executive functioning disabilities such as autism. Techniques for stabilizing behavior are the main focus to ultimately prepare for an environment of inclusion for all special needs students.

Students are eligible for licensure after completion of the curriculum and student teaching in a special needs environment. This degree program is fully accredited by both national and state level associations.

Master of Education: Severe Needs Cognitive (K-12) (M.Ed.)

The Master of Education: Severe Needs Cognitive program provides students with instructional techniques for intensive individual education for children and adolescents (K-12) with severe cognitive impairment or mental retardation. Learning outcomes include designing an instructional plan based on the individual needs (physical, behavioral and intellectual) of the special needs student plus effective collaborative practices with parents, physicians and other instructors. Additionally, proficiency in management skills for a variety of medical problems such as physical impairments, limited speech or communication, behavioral problems and difficulty repeating basic skills are implemented.

This master’s level program prepares students for an advanced endorsement and licensure and meets all Colorado state requirements. In addition, it is fully accredited by both national and state level associations.

It provides comprehensive training with an endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing from birth to age 21. Licensure will allow the teacher to work as a home-intervention specialist plus teach preschool, elementary or secondary schools with deaf or hard of hearing children. Learning outcomes include communication instruction for speech, American Sign Language (ASL) and other sign systems.

This graduate program typically requires two years to complete and is available online for convenience distance learning. Institutional recommendation for licensure is available upon completion. Graduate Research is a mandatory requirement for endorsement in special education.

Master of Arts Special Education – Generalist Teacher (M.A.)

The Master of Arts Special Education – Generalist Teacher program prepares students to become teachers for children with disabilities – grades K-12. These disabilities are wide ranging and include learning and behavior disabilities, autism, cognitive and intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. The M.A. Generalist Teacher will not be trained for assisting students with visual or hearing impairments.

This degree program meets national and state standards and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
